Review of Existing Housing Unit Capacity in Ontario
February 5, 2024
On February 27th, 2023 Liveable Ontario released a new report by Kevin Eby, former Region of Waterloo Director of Community Planning. It shows municipalities in the Greater Golden Horseshoe already set aside more than enough land by 2022 to meet all of Ontario's housing needs for 2031 and beyond.
Using data municipalities sent to the Province in fall 2022, this report shows enough land was already in the Greater Golden Horseshoe (GGH) planning system to build more than 2 million homes, twice as many homes as required by provincial housing targets for the GGH and 500,000 more than needed for the entire province.
The report makes it clear there is no planning rationale for building on the Greenbelt or any other lands outside of existing municipal urban boundaries.
